A contract worth approximately 29 million euros has been signed for the construction of an assembly line for Leopard 2 main battle tanks in Lithuania, with the facility expected to be completed in November 2027. The 13,000 square meter facility will be built in the Kaunas Free Economic Zone, with developer YIT Lietuva saying the site will have a total area of nearly 10 hectares with supporting buildings included. In addition to assembling the tanks, the facility will be used to conduct maintenance, repairs and overhaul for the tanks once they enter service, as well as for other heavy vehicles of the Lithuanian Army. YIT Lietuva artists’ depiction of the inside of the facilityThe Lithuanian Army has 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks on order, with manufacturer KNDS saying in December 2025 that up to 41 of the tanks will be built in Lithuania. Should construction proceed as scheduled, YIT Lietuva says the first tank to be assembled at the plant will be rolled out at the end of 2028. In addition to three overhead cranes inside the facility, other infrastructure at the site will include a tank testing track, an immersion pool with extraction equipment, as well as an inclination testing ramp. “This project is significant not only for our company, but for Lithuania as a whole. It will contribute to strengthening the country’s defence infrastructure and will play an important role in ensuring the technical readiness of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in the future,” said YIT Lietuva managing director Kęstutis Vanagas. “We are pleased to be able to contribute to this process with our experience and engineering expertise. ”YIT Lietuva artists’ depiction of the facility“We have reached the first important milestone on the project’s path – the contractor selection and tender procedures have been successfully completed and a contract has been signed with an experienced and capable contractor. We are entering the second stage – the design and construction period of the assemble,” says Egidijus Kunevičius, head of the department of UAB Sweco Lietuva, the company providing construction management and technical maintenance services for this project.
