Tuesday 21 July 2026 - 08:30amJOHANNESBURG - IDAC head Andrea Johnson is expected to testify before the Madlanga Commission, while Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Julius Mkhwanazi return to court. Senior Crime Intelligence officer Colonel Ismail Dawood is also expected to hand himself over to police. Follow our live updates for the latest developments, expert analysis and breaking news as events unfold. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------09:25amIDAC head Andrea Johnson is expected to appear before the Madlanga Commission after being subpoenaed. Johnson is accused of interfering in an assault investigation involving senior crime intelligence officer Feroz Khan. The unit's actions in the arrest of Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo and others have also been questioned. Concerns are mounting over the directorate's leadership. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------08:25amSenior crime intelligence officer Colonel Ismail Dawood is set to surrender at the Hillbrow Police Station this morning over allegations of extortion and assault. Dawood attempted to hand himself over yesterday, but confusion over the J50 warrant stalled his surrender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------08:20amThe attempted murder trial of Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala and his four co-accused continues in the South Gauteng High Court this morning, with all five pleading not guilty. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------08:10amAndrea Johnson is expected to testify at the Madlanga Commission today, finally. The under-fire IDAC boss is also being scrutinised by President Cyril Ramaphosa. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------07:30amThe trial of alleged criminal kingpin Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala entered its second day today. Matlala, his wife, Tsakane and three co-accused, are appearing in the South Gauteng High Court. Yesterday they pleaded not guilty to all 25 charges, which include attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, money laundering, fraud and defeating the ends of justice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------07:20amThe case against Julius Mkhwanazi and Witness K continues in the Johannesburg magistrate's court. The suspended EMPD deputy head and Witness K were arrested on Friday in connection with the theft of precious stones. The gems, worth nearly R15-million, were allegedly stolen in Killarney in 2023 under the guise of a police operation. Mkhwanazi blames his ex-lover for his latest round of legal troubles. He claims Witness K devised a scheme to implicate him in the robbery after their relationship ended. The pair faces charges of fraud and robbery with aggravating circumstances. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------07:15amSecurity strategist Andy Mashaile says growing calls for embattled IDAC head Andrea Johnson to be suspended are justified. "Given the new approach at the NDPP's office, and knowing Andy Mothibi to be a no-nonsense leader, those calls are justified. If you listened to Brian Padayachee's account of how IDAC operates, it suggests the buck stops with the head. "After allegations at the Madlanga Commission, there has been much scrutiny to IDAC's case against Crime Intelligence head Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo over the unit's employment of an allegedly qualified civilian, Brig Dineo Mokwele, to a senior post. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------06:30amCrime Intelligence officer Colonel Ismail Dawood is expected to hand himself over to police today. He initially presented himself at the Sandton police station but was later redirected to Hillbrow. There was confusion over his arrest warrant and where he was meant to surrender. Investigators say a paperwork blunder led to the delay. Dawood faces charges of intimidation and extortion involving approximately R3. 5-million. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------06:10amIDAC head Andrea Johnson is expected to testify at the Madlanga Commission after failing to appear last week, citing illness. Her appearance follows a string of explosive testimony from senior officials within the unit. They've painted a picture of an organisation plagued by internal divisions and what they describe as a punitive culture towards certain individuals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
