A Lunenburg taxi company is returning to full service after a brief pause. SaltWind Transportation announced on Facebook Saturday they were resuming regular service hours, including late-night service on Fridays and Saturdays until 2 a. m. “Over the past several days, we paused full operations out of an abundance of caution while we reviewed our safety procedures and put additional safeguards in place for our drivers, passengers, and the community,” the statement from owner Simon Gordon said. According to the statement, the following changes have been made:An in-cabin camera with video and audio recording has been installedAll company calls will be audio recordedFront and rear-facing cameras will be installed in the coming daysDriver phones are being set up so drivers can quickly notify the company and the appropriate authorities in the event of a security incidentWe have updated our driver logs and incident reporting processWe are continuing to review and strengthen our safety policies as the company growsThe company said the measures were put in place to protect passengers, drivers and the business, and so any serious incident can be documented and responded to. “We also want to be clear that we are happy to provide safe transportation to people who have been drinking. That is part of why we exist,” the statement said. “What we cannot accept is harassment, threats, and unsafe behaviour. ”SaltWind has been in the middle of a dispute with Lunenburg Mayor Jamie Myra over the past several days. The company accused Myra of “inappropriate behaviour” during a late-night pickup on June 12 and banned the mayor, members of his family and several others from the service. Gordon alleged Myra and members of his group were heavily intoxicated when they got into a taxi. Gordon said Myra also indicated family members and friends would “come after” the business if anything became public. SaltWind has also alleged Myra discussed future dealings between the town and the business.
