Mexico-Colombia soccer match set for Baltimore - EUROPE SAYS

Baltimore is getting another major soccer showcase. Mexico and Colombia will meet Sept. 26 at M&T Bank Stadium, adding another high-profile match to a city that has repeatedly shown it can draw for the sport even without a permanent outdoor professional team. The match will open Mexico’s three-game fall MexTour and mark Mexican legend Rafael Márquez’s debut as head coach of the national team. It will also be the first Baltimore stop in the tour’s 23-year history. Mexico and Colombia have split their 29 previous meetings, with 10 victories apiece and nine draws. Colombia, ranked 11th in the FIFA World Rankings, won the most recent matchup, 4-0, on Oct. 11, 2025, in Arlington, Texas. Because the game falls during an official FIFA international window, both countries are expected to bring their top available players. Tickets go on sale Wednesday at 10 a. m. The announcement comes months after a sold-out crowd of 72,026 packed M&T Bank Stadium on March 7 for Inter Miami’s 2-1 win over D. C. United. Lionel Messi scored in the 27th minute, giving many Baltimore-area fans their first chance to watch the global star in person. The stadium has periodically served as the city’s stage for major soccer events. It hosted CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal doubleheaders in 2013 and 2015, and English Premier League clubs Arsenal and Everton played an exhibition there in July 2022. Arsenal won, 2-0. Those events have provided repeated evidence of the region’s appetite for high-level soccer. Turning that interest into a permanent outdoor professional club has proved more difficult. Baltimore’s latest effort centered on a proposed $217 million, state-backed stadium and soccer complex at Carroll Park. The project failed to advanceduring this year’s General Assembly session. The proposal would have brought a women’s USL Super League team and a men’s MLS Next Pro affiliate to Southwest Baltimore, along with practice fields, a youth academy and a community facility. Instead, it joined a long list of plans that generated momentum but failed to produce a team or stadium. For now, M&T Bank Stadium remains Baltimore’s primary stage for major outdoor soccer, even as the city’s search for a permanent club continues. Have a news tip?
