Migori Health CEC Alleges Assault, Theft During Confrontation Involving Suna West MP Peter Masara

Migori County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Caleb Odour Opondi has alleged that he was assaulted and robbed during a confrontation involving Suna West MP Peter Masara at Nyamaraga Sub-County Hospital on July 20, 2026. According to a statement recorded with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Suna West and later reported at Oruba Police Station, the incident occurred shortly before a scheduled visit by the Migori Governor to inspect development projects and address members of the public at the facility. In his statement, Opondi said he arrived at the hospital at around 8:10 a. m. to prepare for the Governor's visit when he encountered the MP, who was accompanied by several people. He alleged that the MP accused him of frustrating development projects in Suna West by diverting projects intended for Nyamaraga Hospital to Awendo Sub-County Hospital and another project earmarked for Marindi Hospital to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital. He further claimed the MP accused him of failing to settle Nyamaraga Hospital's electricity bill, resulting in the disconnection of power. Opondi stated that he denied the allegations, after which the MP allegedly slapped him. He further alleged that individuals accompanying the MP joined in the confrontation by kicking and assaulting him and that his coat was torn during the incident. According to Opondi, members of the public and hospital staff intervened and brought the confrontation to an end. He stated that he was treated at the hospital following the incident while the Governor's programme proceeded as scheduled. Opondi further alleged that during the commotion, he lost Ksh20,000 in cash and a Samsung S22 mobile phone valued at Ksh120,000. He claimed the cash had been in his coat pocket and that the phone went missing after he had left the coat in one of the hospital offices. The Health CECM reported the matter at Oruba Police Station under OB No. 22 dated July 20, 2026, where he was issued with a P3 form. According to his statement, he underwent a medical examination at Migori Teaching and Referral Hospital on July 21 before recording a formal statement with DCI investigators. Police are investigating the allegations.
