The project called NATO00:21is a US project to secure that if there00:24is a war it will be in Europe and not on00:26US soil. That’s forward defense. This is00:29the idea of deterrence. This is American00:31nuclear weapons in Europe. It is to have00:33the fight here. The West00:36which is 12% of humanity is going down. 00:40We are now the last empire. That empire00:43is getting weaker and weaker, more and00:44more desperate and cannot tolerate that00:48there are different views. I mean the00:51more weak you are, the more intolerant00:53you are. 00:56LYANNA PETROVA: Welcome to World Affairs and Context00:58everybody. I’m Lyanna Petrova and today01:00I’m honored to welcome back a fantastic01:03guest Dr. Jan Oberg. Jan is a Swedish01:05peace and conflict researcher, author01:08and co-founder of the Transnational01:10Foundation for Peace and Future Research,01:12which is an organization I absolutely01:14admire and I follow on Substack and on01:17Twitter or X. I highly highly recommend01:19that all our viewers subscribe to it as01:22well. Jan, welcome back to the program. 01:24Thank you so much for joining. 01:26>> OBERG: Oh, it’s a great pleasure for me being01:28with you. I think you’re doing such good01:31and important and highly relevant,01:33urgently important work. So, I hope I01:36can contribute to it. So, we have some01:38synergy from sitting here. Let me just01:40add to your introduction that um the01:44Transnational Foundation is completely01:47independent of government01:51funding and corporate funding. We are01:53only people financed, and we are all01:55volunteers, 50 people around the world. 01:58I just want to say that because there’s02:00very little really truly free research02:03and public education left in the western02:05world in this area. 02:08>> PETROVA: Absolutely. And thank you so much for02:09clarifying. I think it is very very02:11important to know that because there is02:12a big difference between the research02:15produced by government funded uh think02:18tanks and and institutes and those that02:20are independent like yours. Yeah,02:23absolutely. Um recently I came across02:27two outstanding articles that you02:28published on your Substack and um you02:32discussed um basically you focused on02:34the European Union’s transition to war02:36economies and I think this is the most02:38important topic of of of02:42today because this touches upon every02:45single aspect of our lives and it02:47increasingly feels as though Europe as a02:50whole is heading toward a major military02:53confrontation. 02:54that we haven’t seen since World War II. 02:57Um, Jan, would you give us a sense of03:00what you are observing across the EU in03:02terms of economic and security policy03:04transformations?03:07>> OBERG: Well, I chose a perspective that has not03:10been discussed as part of this03:12rearmament in Europe, which comes as a03:16very unfortunate consequence of the03:18stupid NATO expansion that was responded03:21to in an counter-productive way by by03:25Russia invading Ukraine and both parties03:29being happy to use the Ukrainian03:32people for their battle. Um and that03:35perspective was the economic one. 03:38[clears throat] I was motivated by the03:40fact that you’ve heard secretary03:42generals of NATO, you’ve heard the03:44Danish prime minister, you’ve had a lot03:46of European leaders say that it’s a one03:49it’s one way to get the wheels running03:52in the European economy is to invest in03:55the military and switch to a war03:57economy. There’s all I mean it’s not I03:59don’t think the term war economy has04:01been put into any official document but04:03that’s what they do from a civilian04:05peacetime economy to converting it to a04:08military basically like the military04:11should be uplifting the rest of the04:13economy, and then I was reminded of the04:17fact that in the 70s and 80s we were a04:20number of peace researchers and04:22economists04:23who worked with the issue of what was at04:27that time called conversion and that was04:29the idea could you convert the military04:32industry to civilian industry and get04:35a beneficial effect of that, for04:38instance there was the Swedish diplomat04:40or disarmament minister Inga’s big study04:44in the United Nations of this and I sat04:47at the time at the Danish government’s04:49security and disarmament commission and04:52the whole thing about what is the04:53relationship between military04:55investments and civilian investments04:58is something that we should discuss now05:01because I can tell you now at that time05:05and today there does not exist any05:09study, any piece of research, any book,05:13any dissertation that proves that you05:16get more beneficial um effects of05:20military investments than you do from05:22similar civilian investments in the05:25economy. So if you want to waste money,05:28go for the military. If you want to05:30waste and get less employment effects,05:34innovative effects, spillovers to the05:36civilian sector, uh worse hospitals,05:39less cultural life, less welfare for the05:41people, keep on militarizing your05:43economy. It’s: there is nobody who has05:46proved the opposite of what I just said. 05:49Interestingly enough,05:52those who say this today are not05:54research institutes. We are the only one05:56here in Sweden, not in the only one in05:58Sweden, we the only one in Europe, who06:00have published this analysis saying06:04these things. 06:06No other research institute have done06:08it. Not CRI, not PO, not the other peace06:11research, not those you would expect06:12knowing about economy and military and06:16beneficial or nonbeneficial effects of06:18it. It’s the banks06:21and the bank studies you will find if I06:24remember correctly the one is from the06:26Danish National Bank and I think the um06:29European bank too are clearly saying06:33thatthere are less effects from06:36military investments than there would be06:38from comparable equally large civilian06:41investments. So if you want to I mean06:45Europe is in deep economic crisis. 06:48Germany is falling apart as everybody06:50knows. Volkswagen is probably going to be06:52taken over by China. You have written06:55you have you’ve given a lecture in your06:57own program which is excellent about06:59these things which I was happy to07:01repost. Everybody knows that we are in07:04crisis, and there are competitors such as07:06China and Russia to a certain extent and07:09the US is giving us all these kinds of07:11problems with Trump and tariffs and god07:14knows what. We’re now choosing European07:17leaders are now choosing something that07:20they must know if they are not ignorant07:23beyond uh permissible07:26will make the economy less growth07:29oriented, less welfare oriented, less07:32innovative in the civilian sector. And07:35therefore I call the subtitle of my07:37article “Are they ignorant or do they lie07:41deliberately?” because they cannot all07:43these leaders basically everybody has07:45said it is that state leaders they07:48cannot not know from their experts if07:51they lose any um from their banks etc. 07:54They cannot be ignorant about the fact07:56that I’ve just told you there is no07:58study that proves that what they [Europe’s leaders] say is true. 08:01…———————Investigative historian Eric Zuesse’s latest book,AMERICA’S EMPIRE OF EVIL: Hitler’s Posthumous Victory, and Why the Social Sciences Need to Change, is about how America took over the world after World War II in order to enslave it to U. S. -and-allied billionaires. Their cartels extract the world’s wealth by control of not only their ‘news’ media but the social ‘sciences’ — duping the public.
