The new facility will open to the public on Aug. 8, while the new ambulance bay will be in service as of Monday, July 27. Gena Bugden, vice-president of services for NLHS, said the renovations represent “the first steps in a significant transformation of emergency services at Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest hospital. ”A trauma room inside the new emergency department at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s, NL. Health Minister Lela Evans said the additions are “an important step” in addressing issues like long wait times in the current emergency department at the Health Sciences Centre. “We’ve all heard stories of overcrowding at our emergency department,” Evans said — an issueNewfoundlanders have complained of for years. “These renovations are badly needed, and it’s going to really, really modernize how we deal with patients. ”Evans noted $46 million has been invested to modernize the province’s busiest emergency department. Another$800,000 was also earmarked in Budget 2026 to help ensure the new facility is properly staffed. “When we are planning to provide services and infrastructure, we’re going to properly and adequately fund it,” she said. “We’re going to put it in the budget so that NLHS are not struggling to try and cover those costs. ”Daniel Parsons, senior director of provincial capital planning, infrastructure and engineering for NL Health Services, showcases the new waiting room at the emergency department of the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. Bugden said the new emergency department is designed to ensure patients receive the care they need in a “go-forward fashion,” without having to exit and re-enter the emergency area. “So whether patients enter from the ambulance bay or enter from the waiting room, you will continue to go forward, so there will be no going back to the waiting room,” she said. A new ambulance bay opens July 27 at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. The new ambulance bay, which opens July 27, is completely enclosed, meaning patients and paramedics will be protected from the elements when entering the hospital. Paramedics will be able to access a central corridor reserved solely for patients arriving by ambulance directly from the new ambulance bay, Bugden added. Bugden says patients at the current emergency department will be transferred to the new facility on Aug. 8. The new developments represent the first of four phases in amajor renovation of the entire emergency department at the HSC. The health authority anticipates the project will take four years in total.
