NiMet, Climate Change Council Seal Deal To Strengthen Early Warning, Climate Data
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on climate services, data management and national resilience initiatives.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on climate services, data management and national resilience initiatives. The agreement was reached on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the Director-General of the NCCC Secretariat, Dr. Omotenioye Majekodunmi, in Abuja. Prof. Anosike said NiMet, as the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, provides the baseline atmospheric data required for climate trend analysis, risk assessment and reliable climate projections. He stressed the need for both institutions to co-develop climate projections, strengthen early warning systems, standardise climate data and undertake joint research to support evidence-based climate policies. “Enhanced collaboration will provide policymakers with localised, science-based information needed to implement effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies,” Anosike said. “It will also improve the downscaling of global climate projections into practical advisories for communities and climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, health, water and transport. ”The NiMet Director-General further noted that quality meteorological and climate data are prerequisites for accessing international climate finance. He said both agencies could explore joint funding proposals to support climate resilience, early warning systems and climate infrastructure projects. NCCC Welcomes PartnershipResponding, Dr. Majekodunmi welcomed the NiMet delegation and commended the agency for its contributions to climate services and weather information in Nigeria. She expressed strong support for closer institutional collaboration. The two agencies agreed to formalise the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote sustained collaboration in climate services, climate data management, climate research, early warning systems, capacity development and other areas of mutual interest. The MoU is expected to align NiMet’s technical expertise in weather and climate data with the NCCC’s mandate to coordinate national climate policy and Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Agreement. The visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of NiMet and the NCCC to advancing national climate policy, strengthening institutional collaboration, and protecting lives, livelihoods and the environment through improved climate services and evidence-based action.
