Oborevwori Approves ₦175 Million Support Package For Delta Returnees From South Africa

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has announced financial assistance worth ₦175 million for 86 indigenes who recently returned from South Africa after being affected by xenophobic attacks. The support package was unveiled during a reception and reintegration programme held at the Government House in Asaba. The governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Johnson Erijo, assured the returnees that the state government would stand by them as they work to rebuild their lives. As part of the intervention, each of the 86 returnees will receive ₦2 million to help them settle back into society. They will also be entitled to free medical examinations at all government-owned hospitals across the state. The governor further approved monthly financial support to ease their economic burden. Individuals will receive ₦200,000 every month, while families will get ₦300,000 monthly. The payments will begin in August and continue until May 29, 2027. Oborevwori strongly criticised the attacks against Africans living in South Africa, saying such actions should never be accepted. He stressed that nobody should be subjected to violence or forced to live in fear because of where they come from. “We watched with dismay the xenophobic attacks targeted at fellow Africans in South Africa,” he said. “No human being deserves to be beaten, displaced or live in fear because of their nationality. ”The governor also appreciated President Bola Tinubu for ensuring the safe return of the affected Nigerians, describing the federal government’s response as quick and encouraging. He explained that the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services has been directed to provide trauma counselling and psychosocial support to help the returnees recover emotionally and adjust to life back home. Oborevwori encouraged families, friends and communities across Delta State to welcome the returnees with kindness and understanding. According to him, such compassion reflects the values of the people of the state. “This painful experience must not deter your entrepreneurial spirit,” he said. “You left with courage to seek a better life; let that same resilience and determination help you build a better future. ”The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating more opportunities for residents while also calling for stronger protection for Nigerians living in foreign countries. Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Terry Etacherure, praised the governor for acting quickly to support the returnees. “We are extremely grateful to the governor for the massive support and the expeditious action taken to ensure this ceremony holds,” he said. “We receive the returnees with open arms and grateful hearts, thankful to God that your lives were spared and to the federal government for the timely evacuation. ”Jacob Agbada, who spoke on behalf of the returnees, expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for the assistance. He assured the authorities that the beneficiaries would make good use of the financial support to rebuild their lives. Earlier in July, the Federal Government announced that 1,490 Nigerians had been evacuated from South Africa in seven separate batches following an increase in xenophobic attacks in the country.
