Pakistan is set to join the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) during Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar’s visit to China, where he is attending the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday. In a statement posted on X, the ministry said Dar will sign Pakistan’s accession to WAICO as part of his visit to Shanghai. He is also expected to hold meetings with government officials, technology leaders and international participants to discuss cooperation on inclusive and equitable artificial intelligence. According to the ministry, Pakistan’s accession to WAICO reflects the country’s efforts to strengthen international cooperation in emerging technologies and expand its engagement in global discussions on artificial intelligence. The World Artificial Intelligence Conference, held annually in Shanghai, is one of China’s leading technology forums. The event brings together government representatives, researchers, technology companies and industry leaders to discuss advances in artificial intelligence, governance frameworks, innovation and international cooperation. Pakistan’s planned membership comes as countries increasingly seek to shape global standards for artificial intelligence while expanding investment in the technology. Artificial intelligence has become a major area of strategic competition, particularly between the United States and China, which continue to invest heavily in AI research, infrastructure and regulatory frameworks. At the same time, governments, technology companies and policy experts have expressed growing concern about the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Issues including cybersecurity, misinformation, data privacy, ethical governance and the impact of automation on employment have become central to international policy discussions. Pakistan has identified digital transformation and technology-led economic growth as priorities in recent years. Government officials have promoted investment in digital infrastructure, innovation and emerging technologies as part of broader efforts to modernize the economy and strengthen international partnerships. Dar’s participation in the Shanghai conference also reflects Pakistan’s efforts to deepen technological cooperation with China while increasing its role in international dialogue on the governance and responsible development of artificial intelligence.
