Pentagon begins review of U. S. troop deployment across Europe - Times Kuwait

The United States has launched a review of its military presence in Europe as part of efforts to encourage NATO allies to assume greater responsibility for the continent’s conventional defense. The announcement was made on Monday by Under Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby, who said the review follows remarks by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in June. Writing on X, Colby described the process as a “real review” aimed at ensuring NATO moves “quickly and irreversibly” toward a Europe that takes primary responsibility for its conventional defense. He said the review is intended to accelerate NATO’s transition into what he described as a stronger, fairer, and more sustainable alliance. The move comes amid growing U. S. pressure on European allies to increase their defense commitments. Washington has also criticized several European countries that reportedly declined to allow U. S. forces to use NATO bases on their territory during the recent conflict with Iran. Hegseth has previously warned that the United States could reduce its contribution to NATO’s budget if member states fail to meet defense spending commitments agreed at last year’s NATO summit in The Hague. At the summit, NATO allies pledged to allocate at least 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) to security-related spending by 2035, including 3. 5% dedicated to core military expenditures.
