Polk County Public Health reports no local cases of cyclosporiasis

Published 2:30 pm Thursday, July 23, 2026Residents encouraged to take precautions as officials monitor outbreakPOLK COUNTY—Polk County Public Health says there are currently no confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in the county, despite a statewide outbreak that has sickened more than 560 people across North Carolina. During an update released on Wednesday, July 22, a Polk County Public Health nurse said the county remains free of reported cases but encouraged residents to take precautions as health officials continue monitoring the outbreak. Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection commonly linked to contaminated fresh produce. According to public health officials, the illness can cause watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, gas and other gastrointestinal symptoms that may last for several weeks if left untreated. Health officials recommend residents thoroughly wash their hands and rinse fresh fruits and vegetables before eating them. While washing produce can help reduce contamination, officials said cooking is the only reliable way to kill the parasite. “Here’s how to stay safe: always wash your hands and all produce. Washing helps, but cooking is the only way to kill the parasite,” the public health nurse said in the update. “Consider skipping raw produce when dining out for now, and if you develop symptoms, please see your healthcare provider. ”Anyone with questions about the cyclosporiasis outbreak or concerns about possible symptoms is encouraged to contact Polk County Public Health at 828-722-5248.
