POLL: Do you believe in man-made climate change?

A firefighter douses flames during the mass operation to extinguish the Cairngorm wildfire. Picture: Cairngorm National Park. There have been lively discussions online this week regarding climate change - with some wildly differing opinions. First the opening of consultation into the Rosebank development led to a debate as to whether the UK government should support more oil and gas extraction from the North Sea. Then, a Facebook post by Shetland MSP Hannah Mary Goodlad about the wildfires in the Cairngorms sparked another heated discussion. Ms Goodlad said the fires brought climate change “closer to home. ”However, many people commenting in response blamed poor land management or careless visitors. Some went so far as to deny that man made climate change even exists, highlighting fluctuations that have occurred in global temperatures dating back millions of years. Ms Goodlad’s response cited her experiences as a geologist. “I have worked with earth's history - the multi-billion year version of it,” she said. “The Vostok ice cores show that CO2 and temperature are linked, over glacial cycles driven by Milankovitch cycles - but those changes unfolded over thousands of years. “Today’s sharp rise in CO2 and rapid warming are occurring FAR faster and are driven by human emissions, not orbital cycles. ”More than 99 per cent of scientists agree that man made climate change exists.
