Prince William Warns of Dangers of Climate Change in Rare Personal Message

Prince William took a break from his summer vacation to share a rare personal message in response to the European wildfires. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating wildfires across France, Spain and the UK,” he posted in a message on social media. The Prince of Wales continued, “We are deeply grateful to the firefighters, emergency services and volunteers working tirelessly in extraordinarily difficult conditions. These events are a stark reminder of the challenges posed by an increasingly extreme climate and the importance of protecting both people and nature. ” He signed the message “W” for William. Wildfires are currently burning in Bordeaux, France, which President Emmanuel Macroncalled“completely unprecedented”; in Madrid and Valencia in Spain; and in the Cairngorms national park in Scotland. “This climate emergency is exceeding every threshold and scale that scientists have long warned Spain and Europe as a whole about,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchezsaidtoday. Prince William’s call to the “stark reminder of the challenges posed by an increasingly extreme climate” echoes his work with the Earthshot Prize, which he launched in 2020 to fund companies looking to protect the planet. An aide said at the time Williamwanted to be able to look his children in the eyeover how he used his position to fight climate change. Later this year, the Princeis set to travel to Mumbai for the 2026 Earthshot Prize, saying “We must continue to look to the future with urgency and optimism. ”During a speech last month at The Royal Foundation’s United for Wildlife forum, hesaidhis Earthshot Prize “keeps my environmental anxiety at bay because I can actually see some of the things we are doing are bringing change. We can do this. There are actually tangible benefits, and it helps me sleep at night. ”Emily Burack (she/her) is the Deputy Digital Editor for Town & Country, where she covers entertainment, celebrities, the royals, and a wide range of other topics.
