Put security before politics, Tambuwal urges Tinubu

Former Governor of Sokoto and Senator representing Sokoto South, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has urged President Bola Tinubu to focus on addressing Nigeria’s worsening insecurity rather than engaging in political activities ahead of the 2027 elections. Tambuwal made the appeal on Thursday during a condolence visit to victims of recent bandit attacks in Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where he also announced a donation of ₦20 million to families displaced by attacks in Bodinga and Tureta Local Government Areas. Addressing community leaders and displaced residents, the former governor said the recurring attacks in Sokoto and other parts of the country underscored the need for the Federal Government to make security its top priority. We are deeply concerned about what is happening here, across Sokoto State and indeed the entire country,” Tambuwal said. He stressed that the constitutional duty of every government was to protect lives and property, urging the President to concentrate on governance. “This is the time the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should focus on the number one responsibility of government as enshrined in the Constitution—the security of lives and property. “The President, his team and his party should devote their energy to addressing insecurity rather than engaging in electioneering activities,” he said. Tambuwal further appealed to Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to redirect the administration’s attention towards restoring peace across the country. “I call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deemphasise politics and focus on governance, particularly the issue of insecurity. It is only when people are safe and secure that they can fully benefit from roads and other infrastructure,” he added. The senator also renewed his support for the establishment of state police, saying he had consistently backed the initiative despite concerns that it could be abused by some state governments. “Yes, we are in opposition in Sokoto, but I supported state police because I believe every genuine effort aimed at restoring security should be encouraged. It is only when there is security that there can be meaningful development,” he said. Tambuwal noted that he had advocated stronger security measures since his time in the House of Representatives, maintaining that insecurity remained the country’s most pressing challenge. He announced a donation of ₦10 million to displaced families in Bodinga and another ₦10 million to victims of an earlier bandit attack in Tureta, bringing his total support to ₦20 million. “I hereby support our brothers and sisters displaced by these unfortunate attacks in Bodinga with the sum of ₦10 million, and I extend the same support to those displaced in Tureta as we work with NEMA to provide relief. May Allah grant those who lost their lives Aljannatul Firdaus and bring an end to this menace,” he said. Tambuwal offered prayers for those killed in the attacks and called for sustained efforts by all levels of government to end the wave of banditry affecting communities in Sokoto and across the country.
