A B. C. recovery and towing company is putting together plans to remove over a dozen vehicles left abandoned in the Lac du Bois grasslands area this fall. Mathieu Jubinville, the owner of Revelstoke-based Revy-Stuck Offroad Rescue and Recovery, said the company was in the Lac du Bois Grasslands in late June, where they recovered a Pontiac Sunfire that had been abandoned for several months — the result of a single vehicle crash. “When we spoke to the RCMP, he said he had about 100 files from people calling it in, saying, ‘Hey, there’s a car down there,’ so they were quite happy to get those files closed up,” Jubinville said. He started the off-road recovery and rescue company about a year ago and said he’s done several recoveries of abandoned vehicles free of charge. Jubinville said he sees it as a a bit of a side project for the company and called it a win-win. “We have the tools, we have the equipment, so it’s pretty easy for us to grab one or two (vehicles) at a time and kind of clean up the environment a little bit and maybe generate a little bit of awareness for our company,” he said. Now he’s got “big plans” in the works for a mass cleanup in the Slot Canyon Trails area, where there are about 13 abandoned vehicles he estimated are about 600 to 700 feet from the roadway. “We've got a lot of steel cable and a lot of people that are coming to help with that project,” he said. “I've got to get the right clearance and permissions first. So that's what I've been working on here for the last little bit. ”Jubinville said he’s still looking for volunteers to help out with the project and the plan is to start in the fall when temperatures are cooler. He said there’s plenty of debris scattered around the site that needs to be cleaned up as well, but it may take days to pull all the abandoned vehicles from the area. “What we would like to do is start with a few of the easier ones and that’s going to kind of give us an idea of how we go about getting the ones that are further down,” he said. Jubinville said vehicles are considered abandoned after a certain amount of time and are generally scrapped once recovered. He said there’s typically not a lot of value left in the vehicles, otherwise the owners would recover them themselves. He said in other instances towing companies may not service areas where vehicles have been abandoned or their owners may not have insurance, or the inclination, to cover the costs. He said many of the abandoned vehicles he’s recovered have typically been found through posts on social media. He said he’s setting up a page on his company’s website where people will be able to report abandoned vehicles. Revy-Stuckhas partner offices in Kamloops, Peachland and Revelstoke.
