Recruitment challenges grow despite unemployment rising, finds Surrey business - Pro Landscaper UK

Surrey-based horticultural businessCS Gardenshas recorded 45 candidates who have either failed to turn up for interviews or first day of work over the last 12 months. According to the latest Office for National Statistics figures, the unemployment rate stands at 4. 9% across the UK and 4% in the South East specifically. While these remain relatively low by historical standards, unemployment rates are increasing from recent lows and is now closer to levels seen for much of the past decade. The gardening and landscaping business says applicants have dropped out across the entire recruitment process, in some cases after formally accepting positions. It adds that repeated no-shows have left vacancies unfilled and placed pressure on existing staff. Calogero Scannella, managing director of CS Gardens, comments on the situation:“The scale of the problem has become a defining challenge for the business. To have nearly 50 people not turn up when you are trying to fill four jobs is something we simply did not anticipate. “What surprises us most is that many of these applicants have actively pursued the role, attended initial conversations and, in some cases, accepted the position before disappearing completely. ”CS Gardens continues to fill the remaining roles and warms that without more consistent engagement from candidates, similar businesses may struggle, too.
