We have experts available to be interviewed about a significant 2024 research study published by theUniversity of Maryland Institute for Health Computing(UM-IHC) that found that smoke from Canadian wildfires and the resulting poor air quality can affect the health of people who live thousands of miles away. The study, published in the journalJAMA Network Openin December 2024, was based on data from June 2023, when plumes of smoke from Western Canadian wildfires drifted across the country, leading to very poor air quality days on the East Coast, including in Baltimore and the surrounding region. Researchers found that medical visits for heart and lung problems rose by nearly 20 percent at University of Maryland Medical System hospitals during six days in June 2023. The lead author, Mary E. Mardarelli, MD, a recently graduated pulmonary critical care fellow at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and Bradley A. Maron, MD, Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Co-Executive Director of the UM-IHC, are available for interviews. Here’s alinkwith more information about the study. UM-IHC is a collaborative strategic initiative by the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the University of Maryland, College Park, and the University of Maryland Medical System, an. academic private health system that delivers 25 percent of all hospital care in urban, suburban and rural communities across the state of Maryland.
