Riedel’s RefCam Live was used for the first time during an international soccer match. In combination with Riedel’s Easy5G Private 5G network, the camera solution was integrated into an existing broadcast set-up comprising approximately 30 cameras to provide viewers with additional insight directly from the referee’s perspective. During the friendly match between the German men’s national team and Ghana, the focus was on seamless integration into the existing television production. The goal was to complement the established camera angles at the Stuttgart stadium without altering the usual production workflow. RefCam delivered authentic close-range footage, from player-referee interactions and controversial match situations to the teams’ warm-ups and line-ups. “In an international context, RefCam offers far more than just a new camera angle. It realises its full potential precisely in those moments when closeness, dynamism and emotion become visible. At the same time, it helps referees capture critical match situations and make them easier to understand by recording relevant scenes directly from the referee’s perspective,” said Dalton Koch, Junior Project Manager at Riedel Communications. Riedel’s Easy5G system, comprising an Easy5G Core and two base stations, was used for wireless signal transmission. The signal was transmitted to the television production via SDI. The international referee team also used RefComms with Bolero S to ensure clear and reliable communication during the match. “Following successful deployments in various leagues and cup competitions, this international soccer match marks an important milestone for RefCam and Easy5G,” said Jacqueline Voss, Executive Director of Strategy and Innovation at Riedel’s Managed Technology Division. “We are delighted with the successful implementation in close collaboration with the DFB. It illustrates how we at Riedel approach innovation: practical, production-ready and with clear added value for viewers, production partners and sports organisations. ”Riedel’s RefCam Live and Easy5G Private 5G network will be displayed at IBC2026 in Amsterdam from 11–14 September at stand 10.
