BEIJING — Team South Africa has concluded a high-level diplomatic mission to China aimed at securing critical investment for the country’s energy infrastructure. Led by Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the delegation focused on aligning Chinese industrial capabilities with South African national priorities at the South Africa-China Electricity and Energy Investment Conference in Beijing this week. The Department of Electricity and Energy confirmed that the mission has resulted in a robust pipeline of investment interest. Notably, six key Original Equipment Manufacturers in the energy sector have expressed advanced interest in South African projects. These opportunities are anchored by the Integrated Resources Plan 2025, which serves as the blueprint for the country’s future energy mix and industrial-led growth. Significant progress was reported on several long-standing initiatives during the visit. Sasol has commissioned Envision to design a green hydrogen system for its Sasolburg operations. This project aims to produce green hydrogen for eMethanol and sustainable aviation fuel, supporting Sasol’s broader strategy to decarbonise its industrial assets. In the nuclear sector, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between South Africa’s National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute and the China National Nuclear Corporation. The two entities will collaborate on advanced technologies for nuclear waste disposal. The South African delegation also conducted technical site visits to inspect ultra-high-voltage transmission technologies and green energy supply systems for data centres. These developments come at a time when South Africa is under intense pressure to stabilize its national grid and transition toward cleaner energy sources. The partnership with Chinese industrial giants is viewed as a strategic move to bridge the gap between policy planning and the physical implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects. By securing these commitments, the government hopes to accelerate the execution of high-impact energy projects that can stimulate economic growth. The mission concludes with a clear roadmap to translate technical insights into actionable project pipelines, focusing on strengthening industrial expansion through Special Economic Zones and modernised transmission networks.
