State College adopts new immigration ordinance, limiting civil cooperation with ICE - EUROPE SAYS

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WJAC) — After months of debate, State College Borough has anew ordinanceon civil immigration issues and cooperation with federal authorities. At Monday night’s borough council meeting, councilmembers restated their priorities that motivated work on an immigration policy related ordinance. “Our commitment to protect our immigrant residents of State College from the ‘thuggish’ behavior of the administration and, in particular, DHS, ICE and other agencies. With protestors shouting outside the council chambers, strong allegations were made inside. “Immigration enforcement right now is geared towards those who look like immigrants from the global south. Trump’s vision is very clearly a white nationalist one. ”However, the new ordinance doesn’t include everything that was originally considered. “Like the barring of wearing masks, apparently we have no legal authority to make such a law to require that of federal agents. ”Council unanimously approved an ordinance generally prohibiting borough employees from interacting with federal authorities on civil immigration enforcement. Council also approving a separate, related resolution. “For items that our legal counsel did not feel we could legally pass as an ordinance, but that we want the community to know this council stands for. ”The council action does not prohibit the borough police or employees from cooperating with federal authorities on criminal investigations.
