Students get inside look at health care careers

BodyTwenty-four high school students from five Oregon counties recently visited St. Charles Bend as part of Cascades East AHEC’s MedStars program to explore the many career paths available in health care. Students spent the day gaining hands-on experience alongside caregivers in clinical education, casting, phlebotomy and the cath lab. They were also joined by OHSU medical students and Dr. Callie Krewson, a resident in the Three Sisters Rural Track Program, who shared their experiences, insights and passion for caring for patients and communities. Beyond the skills they practiced, students built meaningful connections with health care professionals who shared their knowledge, career journeys and the many opportunities available in health care. For many students, their time at St. Charles was the highlight of the five-day camp. One participant shared:"It made my future seem more real and attainable. Prior to this, I knew I could do it, but I was hesitant. Now I’m fairly certain because of what I have seen. I just want to keep learning. "Thank you to our caregivers for investing their time and expertise to inspire the next generation of health care professionals. Experiences like these help students see what’s possible and take the next step toward turning their dreams into reality.
