Swiggy Instamart Names Gautam Swaroop As Chief Business Officer

Swiggy has appointed Gautam Swaroop as Chief Business Officer (CBO) for Instamart, handing him responsibility for commercial operations that include customer growth, category management, and brand partnerships. The appointment comes shortly after the exits of former CBO Hari Kumar and COO Ankit Jain, highlighting a broader leadership reset within the quick commerce business. Swaroop joins Instamart after serving as CEO of OYO's international business, where he oversaw operations across the US, UK, Europe, China, and Latin America. Before OYO, he worked at McKinsey & Company and spent more than a decade at Dr Reddy's Laboratories. Instamart is navigating one of the most competitive periods in India's quick commerce market. While Blinkit continues to lead the category and Zepto has strengthened its position as the second-largest player, Amazon and Flipkart are investing heavily in dark store expansion and customer acquisition. Swiggy is trying to improve execution without fully re-entering aggressive pricing battles. Commercial Execution Takes Center StageAnnouncing the appointment, Girish Menon, CHRO, Swiggy, said: "Gautam brings deep expertise and a proven track record of scaling businesses in dynamic, fast-paced industries, and his leadership will be beneficial as we continue to deliver unparalleled convenience to consumers. I'm delighted to welcome him to the team. I would also like to thank colleagues who have helped build the business and wish them success in their future endeavours. "The appointment suggests Swiggy is placing greater emphasis on commercial efficiency, supplier relationships, and category expansion rather than relying solely on discount-led customer growth. Swaroop will oversee functions that directly influence both revenue growth and margin improvement, areas that have become increasingly important as quick commerce companies seek sustainable business models. Growth Remains Strong, But Profitability Is Still A ChallengeAccording to Swiggy's latest quarterly results, Instamart's revenue grew more than 50% year over year, while Gross Order Value (GOV) rose nearly 69%. Average Order Value also increased as the platform expanded beyond groceries into higher-value categories. The company has also continued to add dark stores across new cities, strengthening its delivery network. However, rapid expansion has come at a cost. Swiggy continues to invest heavily in its quick commerce business, and Instamart remains loss-making despite revenue growth. Earlier financial disclosures showed that adjusted EBITDA losses in the business continue to be substantial, highlighting the challenge of balancing expansion with profitability. The company has also indicated plans to gradually transition Instamart toward an inventory-led operating model similar to Blinkit, although regulatory and shareholder approvals remain part of that process. Industry Competition Is Shifting Beyond DiscountsCompanies are increasingly competing on assortment, customer retention, private labels, advertising revenue, and operational efficiency. Leadership appointments are therefore becoming as strategically important as network expansion. Swaroop's background in scaling international businesses and managing complex commercial operations could help Instamart strengthen its execution as competition evolves. His own comments reflect that broader focus. Gautam Swaroop, CBO, Instamart, said: "I'm excited to join Instamart at such an important juncture in its growth journey. I look forward to partnering with the teams across the business to drive growth, build stronger consumer and partner experiences, and create enduring value as we scale. "The statement underscores a strategy centred on long-term operational value rather than short-term market share gains. Leadership changes across India's quick commerce companies increasingly reflect the sector's changing priorities. The initial land grab driven by discounts and expansion is giving way to a more mature phase where supply chains, category management, advertising, and commercial execution will likely determine the next set of winners. For Swiggy, bringing in an executive with experience in scaling businesses across global markets signals that the company sees operational leadership as central to Instamart's next stage of growth.
