TCI firm leads Guyana claims to clean environment - EUROPE SAYS

The Guyana office of Provo law firm Stanbrook Prudhoe represents environmental campaigner clients taking on the Attorney General of Guyana and ExxonMobil in a 2-day hearing this week in Georgetown. The case is about the effect of largescale offshore oil extraction within the territorial waters of Guyana. The Constitution of Guyama at Article 149(J)(1) protects the right to an environment that is not harmful to health or well-being. The proceedings seek declarations that the Guyana state allowing oil production at current levels breaches that protected right. Tim Prudhoe KC leads the case with Guyana-based colleague Saevion David-Longe also appearing. The hearing will involve expert evidence from renowned and widely-published Professor Bill McGuire as to the harmful effect of use of oil. Commenting on this firm’s involvement, King’s Counsel Tim Prudhoe said “The need for these proceedings is sadly all-too apparent. As I have come to expect when taking on organisations with access to significant resources, the case will continue to be opposed every inch of the way. That said, we are committed to the clients’ project and are proud to have been involved by instructing lawyer Melinda Janki on such a complex and worthwhile project. What I like to call ‘pointy-end’ advocacy. Very much looking forward to it, as too is my first rate colleague Saevion. ”Tags:EnvironmentTCI firm leads Guyana claims to clean environment
