The Andy Burnham Bounce is Real. What next for UK Politics?2026-06-19T10:23:16+01:00Adrian WarnockImage: PixabayDoes loyalty mean it is never right to challenge a leader?Unusually for me I have recorded an “emergency podcast” to mark a significant news event in the UK. In this video podcast, I discuss the differences between an American system of a directly elected president, who seems to be impossible to remove, and ours parliamentary system, where prime ministers are regularly fired by their own party’s elected representatives. The question now seems to be how quickly Burnham will become our prime minister, not whether he will be or not. I spoke about political hope, how Burnham seems to have charisma and is offering change. He believes, and many hope, that he can single-handedly prevent Nigel Farage from eventually becoming prime minister. He argues that, if he is successful, he will stop British politics becoming as divided and hateful as the American system already is. Andy’s charisma is seen in both his campaign advert, and his acceptance speech. Even Keir Starmer’s best admirers and closest political allies would agree that he could never record videos as impactful as these:One question is what can we learn from all this that might also apply to church governance. Keir Starmer said yesterday that it isnever right to challenge a leader, a sentiment echoed by many in the Church. But what does a pastor need to do before we finally act to say “enough is enough?”Loyalty to a leader who is disloyal to Jesus is no longer loyalty but traitorous to the one who died for us. Too many leaders have asked for a commitment that goes beyond the biblical command to honor our leaders. There are times when we ought to echo the words of Peter and John:“Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?” (Acts 4:19, NLT). Back to politics, I have always been a centrist, aiming to see the good in those I did not vote for, and the bad in those I did. I am convinced, and discuss this in video below, that we needcapitalism with a hint of socialism. Markets should never be completely free, although having them as free as possible is the best system. Human greed can produce gain for all of us. But it needs regulation and social justice to limit its tendency to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. I also referred to one of my recent Substack articles, which reminded us thatGod honors the poor but humbles the rich. I know that most of my readers are actually rich compared to many others who live in their own countries, let alone the rest of the world. We must understand that the Bible’s warnings and instructions to the rich apply to us. I offer this video podcast as a freewheeling response to the latest UK political news. My podcast production has nowmoved to Substack, but you can still listen wherever you find other podcasts. Substack is certainly a much easier process than what I was using before. Ask me over there how I have moved it across effortlessly and what making a podcast episode and accompanying article looks like now. Don’t worry, I will still be posting here on Patheos, my home since 2003!Watch the VideoHear thepodcast on Substackor wherever you listen to others.
