The hidden costs lurking in your business bins

Many businesses don’t realise they’re paying twice for waste: once when materials are purchased, and again when they’re sent to landfill. But what if some of the materials heading into those bins could be handled differently?Across industries ranging from hospitality and retail to manufacturing and education, businesses are increasingly looking for practical ways to reducewaste, improve recycling outcomes and operate more efficiently. The challenge is often knowing where to start. Why businesses get stuckRyan Collins, head of impact and research atPlanet Ark, says a lack of awareness around available solutions remains one of the biggest barriers preventing businesses from taking action. According toPlanet Ark’s Business Attitudes to Recycling report, businesses commonly cite cost concerns, limited awareness of available options, access issues and competing operational priorities as barriers to improving recycling practices. For instance, there are free recycling services available for coffee pods, mobile phones and printer cartridges. Having the right bin or recycling equipment can actually save time in the long run. ”Businesses are also navigating new challenges, from managing difficult-to-recycle materials such as soft plastics and expanded polystyrene, to preparing for regulatory changes such as NSW’s upcoming food organics landfill ban. Looking beyond the skip binThe right equipment can play a significant role in helping businesses manage waste more effectively. For hospitality venues, glass crushers are a popular option. Modular recycling and waste bin systems are commonly used in offices and retail environments, while cardboard and plastic balers remain staples in manufacturing. Organic waste processors are also becoming increasingly popular as businesses look for ways to manage food waste more efficiently. “The right equipment, like balers or compactors, can help improve operational efficiency by reducing the amount of space that waste takes up on site, as well as the amount of staff time needed to manage waste,” Collins says. “It may also reduce costs by minimising collection frequency and by avoiding the increasing state-based landfill levies charged to waste management companies, and thus passed on to business clients. ”Small changes can add upFor some organisations, relatively simple changes have delivered measurable results. Collins points to a bowling and recreation club that introduced food waste processing machines alongside colour-coded bins for glass, cardboard and green waste. The initiative diverted 130 tonnes of material from landfill each year while reducing waste removal costs by 42%. Another example involved an eyewear distributor that discovered an opportunity hidden within its cardboard waste stream. After conducting a waste audit, the business invested in a cardboard perforator that transformed discarded cardboard into protective packaging, replacing plastic bubble wrap and packaging peanuts. The result was around two tonnes of waste diverted from landfill each year, approximately $6,000 saved in waste management costs and a further $11,000 reduction in packaging expenses. While every organisation’s circumstances are different, examples like these demonstrate how understanding what’s entering a waste stream can reveal opportunities that may otherwise be overlooked. Making informed decisionsFor businesses looking to explore these kinds of opportunities, access to reliable information can be just as important as the equipment itself. This was the purpose behind relaunching Planet Ark’sSmall-scale Recycling Equipment Catalogueas part of the newly integratedRecycling Near Youplatform, Australia’s largest and most comprehensive recycling information platform. The catalogue allows businesses to compare equipment from trusted suppliers and explore solutions for different waste streams. Categories include recycling bins, balers, worm farms, digesters and glass crushers. “We wanted to modernise the catalogue, making it easier for businesses to access critical equipment information and providing a more efficient process for suppliers to list their equipment on the site,” Collins says. “Integrating the catalogue into the Recycling Near You platform opens it up to a massive audience of Australians who use the service. ”“The search function of the catalogue makes it easy for businesses to access the key information about equipment. It also provides the key questions, front and centre on the homepage, that businesses need to ask themselves to help guide their decision. ”Importantly, the catalogue is free to use and equipment suppliers can list their products at no cost, making it easier for businesses to compare solutions and for suppliers to connect with organisations actively seeking recycling and waste management equipment. For businesses unsure where to begin, Collins recommends starting with education. “A great place to start is theResources sectionfor businesses and workplaces on the Recycling Near You platform,” Collins says. “There are simple guides to help green your office or workplace, tips on choosing the right recycler, free bin posters to download, plus more. ”Whether the goal is reducing waste or improving recycling outcomes, taking a closer look at what’s in the bin could be a useful place to start.
