‘They’re Not Just Numbers. They’re People’: Shontel Brown Says 161,000 Ohioans Lost Health Coverage After ACA Cuts

U. S. Rep. Shontel Brownis sounding the alarm over new Affordable Care Act enrollment figures, arguing that the sharp decline in health insurance coverage in Ohio represents more than statistics; it represents families facing impossible financial and medical decisions. “They’re not just numbers. They’re people,”Brownsaid in a video posted on social media, criticizing what she described as the consequences of Republican-backed cuts to Affordable Care Act subsidies. According to Brown,161,385 Ohioanshave lost their Affordable Care Act health insurance coverage, marking what she said is the largest enrollment decline of any state in the nation. “The only thing lower than Ohio’s latest ACA health care enrollment numbers is the bar Republicans have set for bad ideas,”Brown said. She attributed the drop to theexpiration of Affordable Care Act tax credits, which she said Republicans allowed to lapse while supporting tax cuts benefiting wealthier Americans. “Thanks to Trump’s ACA cuts, over 160,000 Ohioans have lost their health care coverage entirely,”Brown said. “That’s one-third of the people covered last year and the largest drop of any state in the nation. ”Brown argued that the effects extend far beyond enrollment data, warning that many households are now financially vulnerable if unexpected medical needs arise. “Thousands of Ohio families are one medical emergency away from a financial disaster,”she said. The Democratic congresswoman accused PresidentDonald Trumpand congressional Republicans of prioritizing tax relief for wealthy Americans over access to affordable health insurance. “While Trump is raking in billions for himself and handing out millions to millionaires, he’s stealing Americans’ health care to pay for it,”Brown said. She also personalized the impact of the reported coverage losses, describing seniors facing significant premium increases and parents forced to make painful financial trade-offs. “They’re seniors staring down a three-figure premium hike they can’t afford,”Brown said. “They’re parents deciding between buying a child’s prescription or getting groceries. ”Brown argued that health care should not become a financial gamble for working families and urged lawmakers to reverse the policy changes she blames for the decline in coverage. “These numbers need to be a wake-up call,”she said. “Republicans need to stop taking orders from Trump and work with us to cancel the cuts and save health care. ”She concluded by reaffirming a position long held by many Democrats. “Health care is a human right,”she stated forcefully. Brown’s comments come as debates over the future of the Affordable Care Act continue to shape national discussions about health care affordability, insurance access and the role of the federal government in supporting coverage for millions of Americans.
