But the $8 billion Penn Station overhaul drew ire from top Democrats. “Donald Trump may want his name plastered across every building in America, but he doesn’t get to turn New York landmarks into monuments to himself,” Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer wrote in a statement. “Penn Station needs to be rebuilt for the millions of commuters who use it, not rebranded to satisfy Trump’s bottomless ego. Secretary Duffy should stop scheming to flatter the president and start delivering the safe, modern station New Yorkers deserve,” he added. A spokesperson for Duffy referred NY1 back to the letter when asked if the renaming was intended to be for the president. The White House did not return an immediate request for comment. Gov. Kathy Hochul hasdiscussed the years in the making station overhaul with the president. On Thursday, her spokesman, Sean Butler, told NY1: “The governor is focused on actually building a new Penn Station, and she believes that’s what everyone should be prioritizing right now. ”But plans to upgrade the station, including renderings released last spring, havesparked tensionbetween Amtrak and the MTA. “The president has been very clear. He really wants this done. He’s a New Yorker, he’s a developer,” Andy Byford, the top Amtrak official leading the Penn Station redesign, told NY1 in a recent interview. “He wants a shovel in the ground by the end of 2027, so the support is rock solid from President Trump,” he said. “My focus is on getting this station rebuilt. Any debate about names, I’m leaving to the politicians. I’m not going there,” Byford added when pressed about a possible name change. The five-page document obtained by NY1 includes the administration’s road map for the next five years, detailing infrastructure improvements to federal highways, railroads and airports.
