Vet's urgent health warning that anyone wanting popular breed should know

LifestyleDogsThe breed has surged in popularity in recent years and are believed to be easy to care for. 16:09, 06 Jul 2026Certain dog breedsare considered to be the perfect family pet due to their temperament and appearance. Smallerdogshave proved popular for being adorable, needing less space at home, requiring reduced exerciseand costing less to feed. ‌While there's no shortage of breeds available, one veterinary surgeon has raised concerns about a particular breed. They've highlighted that one of Britain's most beloved dogs may not be as straightforward to care for as many believe. ‌Dr Suzanne Moyes, working alongside Green Pantry, issued a warning to anyone considering getting a Cockapoo. The breed has experiencedenormous popularity in recent years, but there are several health conditions they can be prone to. ‌Dr Moyes said: "Small breeds like Cockapoos are especially popular, not just for their adorable looks but also for their affectionate and friendly nature. "These dogs have big personalities and make excellent companions, particularly for families seeking a loving and loyal pet. "‌However, potential health complications pose a worry for these dogs. Waggel reports that Cockapoos can anticipate a lifespan of approximately 12-15 years. Their lifespan is considerably influenced by genetics, general health, and dietary quality. Drawing attention to one key health challenge encountered by Cockapoos, Dr Moyes identified obesity as a concern. ‌The vet recommended: "This is easily remedied with a healthy and balanced diet and ensuring everybody is aligned on what the dog should and should not be fed. "As tempting as it can be to slip your pet some food from your plate, this is one of the leading causes of obesity in dogs, and it can, in turn, lead to other health issues such as joint issues and diabetes. "A further concern for Cockapoos is hip dysplasia, a commonly inherited condition in which the hip joint develops abnormally, resulting in instability and discomfort. ‌Dr Moyes went on to say: "Hip dysplasia is an issue that can be exacerbated by obesity. While you can't always prevent joint problems such as hip dysplasia, there is much you can do to help. "For example, try to ensure they get regular exercise, and you could consider complementary therapeutic regimes such as hydrotherapy or laser therapy. "The vet noted that while it's vital to be aware of these conditions, they are not guaranteed to affect every dog.
