Photo by NANCY DAIGLE/For Cochrane Times PostA new partnership between Wallace Drug Store and Rocket Doctor aims to improve access to healthcare in Cochrane by bringing virtual physician services closer to home. On Monday, July 27, and Tuesday, July 28, the locally owned pharmacy will host a Virtual Health Fair to introduce residents to its collaboration with Rocket Doctor and the company’s Virtual Care Pilot program. Recommended VideosThe initiative is designed to help connect patients with licensed physicians through secure virtual appointments, addressing one of the biggest healthcare challenges facing many northern communities — timely access to primary care. Wallace Drug Store owner and pharmacist Brett Morphy said the partnership reflects the pharmacy’s long-standing commitment to serving Cochrane residents. “Our pharmacy has proudly served this community for more than 100 years,” Morphy said. “Healthcare is changing, and we’re excited to show people how technology can help bridge the gap for patients who have difficulty accessing a doctor. “Our goal is to make quality healthcare more accessible while keeping that care connected to the community. We are hoping to bridge the gap that currently exists in healthcare. We have to start thinking outside the box. ”Dr. Keith Thompson, an adjunct faculty member at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, will be available to see patients who are already rostered with him during a two-day session to bring virtual physician services to Cochrane, on July 27 and 28. Photo by SUBMITTEDDuring the two-day event, Dr. Keith Thompson, an adjunct faculty member at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, will be available to see patients who are already rostered with him. Morphy emphasized that this is not a walk-in medical clinic, but staff will be available to help patients arrange virtual appointments with other physicians through the Rocket Doctor network. Rocket Doctor provides access to licensed Canadian physicians through secure virtual consultations, allowing patients to receive assessments, referrals, prescriptions for appropriate medications, and other primary care services without leaving their community. Many services are covered by OHIP for eligible patients, depending on the type of appointment. Visitors to the Virtual Health Fair will also have the opportunity to see emerging healthcare technology firsthand. Dr. Thompson will demonstrate a prototype of the NuraLogix Magic Mirror, an artificial intelligence-powered health assessment platform that uses facial scanning technology to provide non-invasive health measurements. The technology represents the type of virtual care interface that pharmacies may soon use to connect patients in northern and rural communities with healthcare providers remotely. Morphy believes innovations like these can play an important role in improving healthcare access across northern Ontario. “People in smaller communities often face long waits or lengthy travel for routine medical care,” he said. “By combining trusted local pharmacy services with virtual medicine, we hope to make healthcare more convenient and help ensure people receive the care they need closer to home. ”The Virtual Health Fair will be held at Wallace Drug Store on Monday, July 27, and Tuesday, July 28. Pharmacy staff will be available throughout the event to answer questions about Rocket Doctor’s services, demonstrate the virtual care process, and assist patients interested in booking appointments through the new program.
