Who in Latvia has student loans written off and how many debtors are still repaying through the courts - EUROPE SAYS

СтудентыIn 2025, the State Education Development Agency (SEDA) wrote off 390 state education loans and student loans. The grounds for this were cases provided for by law — employment in the public sector, childbirth, disability, the death of the borrower, and the completion of bankruptcy proceedings. At the same time, the collection of debts on unpaid loans continued. At the end of the year, there were 186 enforcement proceedings in progress. During the reporting period, 31 new debt collection cases were transferred to bailiffs, and three new lawsuits against debtors were initiated. At the same time, obligations were terminated in 24 loan cases, and the recovered funds were transferred to the state budget. The most common reason for loan write-offs was employment in state and municipal institutions. On this basis, 234 loans were written off. The total amount of written-off education loans was €81,004, and student loans amounted to €14,913. Another 136 student loans were partially or fully written off after the birth of a child. The total amount of such support exceeded €105,000. In addition, 14 loans were written off due to the disability or death of the borrower, and another six after the completion of bankruptcy proceedings. It is important to understand that the write-off of student loans is not a mass support measure. It is applied only in cases explicitly provided for by law and requires compliance with established conditions. According to SEDA, out of 13,813 state education loans, only 392 are still in the process of repayment or enforcement of court decisions. In addition to loans, the agency also administered scholarships equivalent to loans. Out of 724 such scholarships, monitoring of compliance with obligations and the return of funds to the State Treasury continued in 162 cases. Tags:JaunumilatviaLatvija
