My friends and neighbors are the reason I so love America, California, Butte County and Durham. In the 73 years of my life, I’ve had the pleasure of living in this small burg for 63 of those years. A 10-year-old has no inkling of what may happen over time, but I recall being welcomed, included, and encouraged to participate. My husband laughs and says that since I’m an immigrant I look at things a bit differently. Yes, that is true. If one engages in civic responsibility by voting, volunteering at the library, PTA, spends time on the pool deck with a stopwatch, or mentors young people in a wide-ranging number of individual interests, that person is rich. Rich, by having been challenged, seeing the huge variety of things surrounding us daily, and gladly engaging. Where else but the United States can we all be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, Mexican on Cinco de Mayo, and find no contradiction in attending faith services when paying last respects to a neighbor in a church we may not know well. The Netherlands was my place of birth, and I wholeheartedly support the Dutch World Cup team while they work their way through the various brackets for the current championship. Depending on the day, as I am in online contact with a number of cousins, I often use “Yankee Dutch” for an explanation, as one language comes easier than another. I am glad I live in Durham, and very proud to be an American. Tags:AMERICA 250immigrantlatest headlinesLocal News
