Thaxton brings more than 30 years of nursing and academic leadership experience as WSSU expands health sciences offerings, including new public health degrees. Dr. Cheryl A. Thaxton Winston Salem State University's new health sciences deanWinston Salem State UniversityDr. Cheryl A. Thaxton has been named dean of the School of Health Sciences and chief nursing administrator at Winston-Salem State University, the school announced Monday. Thaxton brings more than 30 years of experience in nursing practice, education, research and academic leadership to the role. She most recently helped launch graduate nursing programs at an academic medical university in Texas and, in 2010, established a palliative care program at a leading national pediatric hospital. She earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Hampton University, her Master of Arts in nursing from New York University, and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from George Washington University. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Thaxton joins WSSU at a period of growth for the university's health sciences programs, including two new public health degrees. This semester, WSSU began offering a Bachelor of Science in public health; next spring, it plans to offer a Master of Public Health with a concentration in emergency preparedness and disaster management, which would be the first MPH offered by a North Carolina HBCU. "Every graduate of WSSU is part of the next generation of healthcare in this country, strengthening the workforce our communities depend on," Thaxton said in a statement. "As our programs grow, my hope is to continue building a place where excellence, collaboration and service are all one and the same and where every student leaves ready to lead. "Chancellor Bonita J. Brown said Thaxton's experience in pediatric and adult hospice and palliative care will help advance WSSU's trajectory in health sciences. "Winston-Salem State University is at an important moment of growth in health sciences, and Dr. Thaxton brings the leadership, experience and vision we need to build on that momentum," Brown said.
