Xi and Lula pledge deeper strategic coordination between China and Brazil

27th July 2026 – (Beijing) Chinese President Xi Jinping has said Beijing is prepared to enhance both bilateral and multilateral strategic coordination with Brazil. Speaking during a telephone conversation with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday, Xi noted that efforts in recent years to build what he described as a shared future between China and Brazil had yielded tangible progress. He said closer alignment of the two countries’ development strategies had supported economic growth, improved living standards and provided a measure of stability amid global uncertainty. Xi pointed out that 2026 marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the launch of the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan, while Brazil is entering an important phase in its domestic political calendar. Against this backdrop, he said China stands ready to intensify coordination with Brazil at both bilateral and multilateral levels to sustain the positive trajectory of relations. Describing China and Brazil as influential members of the Global South, Xi said both nations should uphold what he termed the correct course of history and contribute more actively to reforming and strengthening the global governance system. He added that the two sides should work together to defend international fairness and justice. He also called for advancing higher-quality cooperation within the BRICS grouping, encouraging members to maintain unity, expand practical collaboration and promote greater self-reliance among developing countries. Xi stressed that China values Brazil’s international standing and influence, reiterating Beijing’s support for Brazil in safeguarding its sovereignty and independence and opposing external interference. He added that both nations should contribute to regional and global peace and stability through closer cooperation. For his part, President Lula said bilateral relations had progressed steadily, with trade reaching record levels and cooperation broadening across multiple sectors. He noted that events held during the Brazil-China Cultural Year had further strengthened people-to-people ties. Lula expressed interest in expanding collaboration in areas including artificial intelligence, energy and mineral resources, and welcomed increased investment by Chinese enterprises to diversify economic links. He also congratulated China on hosting the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and praised Xi’s advocacy of open and inclusive international cooperation in the governance of emerging technologies. The Brazilian leader added that his country is prepared to step up multilateral coordination with China, support the authority of the United Nations, deepen solidarity within BRICS and defend multilateralism. He emphasised the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation, while jointly safeguarding global stability and international justice.
