But fifth-grade science is where confidence can disappear quickly. You may remember the order of the planets, yet questions about ecosystems, electricity, matter, or the human body can suddenly feel much harder than they did in elementary school. There is no shame in forgetting what you learned years ago. Most people rarely use this information in everyday life, and scientific knowledge has continued to evolve since many of us last opened a school textbook. Some lessons have been updated, while others were simplified so much that they left behind lasting misconceptions. The real problem begins when those misconceptions are repeated as facts and passed from one generation to the next. You might confidently give a child an answer that sounds correct but is not supported by modern science. These 10 questions cover concepts fifth graders are commonly expected to understand. How many can you answer correctly without searching for help? The image featured at the top of this post is ©Ground Picture/Shutterstock. com
