Franprix, the French convenience supermarket brand owned by Casino, has entered Guinea. Two existing stores operated by local partner ZCO Trading in Conakry have been renovated and rebranded as Franprix, in the Coleah and Kipé neighbourhoods. They stock Casino private label products, fresh food and premium imported grocery products. A third store is planned by end of 2026. The partnership is managed through ExtenC International Partners, Casino Group’s international franchise arm. The timing is notable. Carrefour opened its first Guinea store on the 15thApril 2026, also in Conakry, through a franchise partnership with Imperial Group, a local chain with six stores being rebranded as Carrefour. The only other international supermarket presence in Guinea is Cooperative U, which has three stores. The primary model of the French supermarket chains is to partner with an existing local retailer and rebrand. This asset-light franchise approach is becoming the default for international retail expansion in many the newer markets in Africa. However, in May 2025, H&S Invest Holding signed a franchise agreement to bring Monoprix and Franprix to Morocco with plans for 210 stores by 2035. In December 2024, Casino signed a Monoprix franchise deal with TMT in Egypt targeting 30 stores by 2028. In both cases, the model is to grow the brands through organic expansion. Casino is also exiting markets where it owned assets directly. In December 2025, it sold its BAO Cash & Carry wholesale business in Cameroon to a local buyer. Its longtime West African franchise partner Mercure International of Monaco has been replacing Casino brands with Super U in Congo-Brazzaville, Senegal and Gabon since 2023. In the past 12 months Carrefour has also been expanding. It signed new franchise deals in Guinea (Imperial Group, April 2026), Ghana (Brands For All, December 2025), Ethiopia (Midroc/Queens Supermarket, January 2026) and Nigeria (HyperCity, first store expected September 2026). Carrefour aims to operate in 22 countries in Africa by 2030.
