President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that her administration is implementing enhanced security measures in Michoacan to pave the way for the resumption of avocado exports to the United States.

President Claudia Sheinbaum7th August 2026 – (Mexico City) President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that her administration is implementing enhanced security measures in Michoacan to pave the way for the resumption of avocado exports to the United States, after operations were interrupted due to renewed safety concerns. Speaking at her daily press briefing at the National Palace, Sheinbaum explained that the government’s strategy is centred on increasing the presence of the National Guard in regions within Michoacan where security resources have so far been limited. She stressed that active dialogue is ongoing with United States authorities to ensure that shipments can restart as soon as possible. Sheinbaum noted that meetings have been held with local avocado producers and exporters in Michoacan, which remains the principal source of avocados for the United States market, following a security alert issued by the United States highlighting risks in the area. In parallel, Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has requested urgent discussions with the United States embassy to advocate for the recommencement of inspections, which would take place under the supervision of Mexico’s national food safety service. Sheinbaum reaffirmed her government’s commitment to minimising disruption for the sector and restoring export flows without significant delay. The announcement comes after the United States declared it was suspending avocado imports from Michoacan and halting official activities in the region until further notice following credible threats to United States interests and personnel involved in the inspection process.
