Commissioned byNHSEngland (London) and developed by London’s Health Innovation Networks, the report explores how AI tools, particularly in non‑clinical settings, are already being used in areas such as administration and clinical documentation. While AI has the potential to reduce administrative burden and free up time for patient care, the report stresses that its impact is more complex. Rather than removing work, AI is redistributing tasks, creating new responsibilities for staff around oversight, validation, professional judgement and accountability. The findings suggest that workforce planning, governance and training are not yet keeping pace with how quickly AI is being adopted in practice. In many cases, staff are already using AI tools before organisations have fully adapted their structures, policies and support systems. Against the backdrop of plans to expand AI access toNHSstaff, including the rollout of tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, the report calls for clearer governance, better measures of value, and stronger support for workforce development. Overall, it emphasises that future AI adoption must move beyond a focus on productivity alone, ensuring that the needs, skills and experiences of the workforce are central to implementation.
