OMAN – The Buraimi governorate has launched its first integrated investment project dedicated to fruit cultivation, marking a strategic move to strengthen national food security and attract private investment into the agricultural sector. The project, located in Al Zaroub in Mahdah, has an investment value of more than RO171,000 (approximately US$444,770) and will cultivate, produce, and market figs, lemons, and mangoes. Spread across 30 acres, the farm currently includes around six acres of lemon trees, 5. 5 acres of fig trees, and two acres of mango trees. Work is also underway to prepare a further seven acres for a new fig orchard, thereby expanding production capacity. As a result, the diversified crop mix ensures a steady supply of fresh, high-quality produce to local markets and strengthens the competitiveness of Omani agricultural products. Dr Ahmed bin Saif Al Amri, Director General of Agricultural Fisheries and Water Resources in the Buraimi governorate, said the project has achieved more than 80% of its cultivation programme, reflecting the efficient implementation of modern farming techniques. In addition, planting began in March 2025, and the project reached commercial production by October 2025, highlighting the effectiveness of its planning and execution. On the other hand, modern farming techniques used include efficient irrigation systems, optimized planting densities, and integrated pest management approaches that maximize natural resources while accelerating crop production. Furthermore, the government is supporting private investors through several incentive measures. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, in cooperation with the Governor’s Office and other relevant authorities, continues to facilitate investment procedures, provide technical and advisory support, and address challenges facing investors as part of efforts to expand sustainable agricultural investment in the sultanate. Therefore, by maximizing natural resources and streamlining administrative procedures, the government aims to boost the local economy and ensure a steady supply of fresh produce. More importantly, the initiative addresses national food security by reducing reliance on imported fruit, creating local employment, and building sustainable farming capabilities that can be scaled across the sultanate. Additionally, the Buraimi project serves as a model for future agricultural investments in Oman, demonstrating how public-private partnerships can effectively develop modern, productive farming operations. In the end, the success of this initiative is expected to encourage further private-sector participation in agricultural development, thereby contributing to Oman’s long-term food security and economic diversification goals.
