These talks follow months of discussions on the global tariff regime initially imposed by US President Donald Trump, who had reduced the proposed tariffs for Pakistan from 29% to 19% in previous negotiations. The tariff situation changed after a US Supreme Court ruling invalidating the IEEPA-based tariffs, leading the Trump administration to impose a temporary 10% global tariff expiring on July 24. Pakistan, along with 60 other countries, is also under USTR (United States Trade Representative) investigations under Section 301 for alleged forced labor practices, facing a proposed additional 10% tariff.
